Throughout Latin America, the potential of education for social change is at the center of public debate. From academia, civil society organizations and social movements, the agenda for reforming education is prevalent.
As the world’s interconnectedness grows every second, and as educational policies, practices, and ideas circulate globally through different kinds of networks, educational research is required to engage beyond national borders. While the history of schooling has always been “global” in many respects through cross-pollination of knowledge and pedagogies, it is the very idea of idiosyncratic educational thought that seems to be effacing if one were to read much of the current research on globalization.
Given the inequity in the distribution of resources globally, certain areas of the world tend to be privileged when it comes to research and exchange. Due in part to language, in part to lack of resources, and in part to politics, Latin America is usually left behind when it comes to places “we can learn something from.”
Education in the Americas: Knowledges and Perspectives seeks to provide an important step in addressing this issue. By calling on post-colonial, indigenous, and pan-American scholars from different traditions, yet deeply committed to the field of education, this conference is a unique bridge and meeting point for everyone involved. This conference seeks to broaden the educational conversation to include voices that have traditionally been marginalized in the US.
Education in the Americas: Knowledges and Perspectives will focus specifically on perspectives from scholars working in or on Latin American education, while providing a unique space for faculty, students, and other educators from the NY area, as well as international scholars to connect, share thoughts and traditions, interrogate each other, and foster an intellectual community crossing all kinds of borders.
We hope you can join us!
